Emily Gailey
Scientist Intern - bioMérieux
R&D Microbiology Scientist Intern
May - August 2024
I interned at bioMérieux, a global biotechnology company that develops clinical and industrial diagnostic solutions. This internship was an incredible learning experience, far exceeding my expectations. I gained valuable insights into the biotech industry, from research and development all the way to bringing a product to market. On a personal level, I developed numerous professional skills, particularly in communication and problem-solving. I also gained technical skills in laboratory safety, strain maintenance, aseptic technique, and bacterial and fungal culturing.

Projects

Validating R&D Dilution Schemes
My main project during the summer was to validate dilution schemes in current R&D experiments and contribute to the R&D Global Strain Management project by organizing the database of strains.
BSL-2 & BSL-3 Risk Assessments
My second project was to create risk assessments of aerosol pathogens for employees working in the BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs. This required me to gain hands-on experience in an R&D BSL-2 lab and understand the process of getting a product from manufacturing to market.
